Ceramic end mill general information

SWISSCERAMILL KERAMIKFRÄSER macht es möglich

The 21st century poses entirely new challenges for materials. Zirconia ceramics belong to the family of high-performance ceramics. It has a special role to play in applications involving severe thermal, chemical and/or mechanical stresses.

Zirconia ceramics

Material for more performance and functionality

High-performance ceramics such as zirconia ceramics have been used in countless areas for many years. Consistent and permanent improvements ensure that the material meets current requirements at all times.

Disadvantages such as brittle properties are constantly being reduced. In technical ceramics, the high-tech material zirconium oxide ceramics has thus set completely new standards and accents. Particularly outstanding here are the extreme fracture toughness, very high edge stability and exceptional flexural strength.

Wide range of applications for zirconia ceramics

Today, carbide tools with individual coatings are used. One cannot deny that this development was very good and is used today in millions of units. However, development has stopped here and new customer requirements cannot be met with coating technology.

Heat buildup on coatings is not ideal, as wear will settle on the surface of the milling tool. Over time, the coating on the cutting edge loosens and the carbide comes into contact with the metal. As a result, the cutting edge becomes dull and the quality of the parts decreases. High pressure on the tool occurs, which comes to a breakage of the carbide milling tool.

Why is zirconia ceramic the solution to this problem?

In recent years, many material developments have been undertaken for milling tools. Pure zirconia ceramics have not prevailed. Zirconia ceramics have been reinforced using aluminum oxide to achieve greater hardness.

Another point is the improvement of the bending strength, because now high loads on bending are possible so that the ceramic cutters do not break with the smallest impacts in the milling process.

Milling Tools Made of Zirconia Ceramics Application

Milling tools made of zirconia ceramics are very popular for high-performance plastics such as PEEK, polycarbonate plastics with glass fiber content and carbon fiber composites. Standard plastics also work very well and can be used without problems.

The main application of milling tools made of zirconia ceramics are light metals (aluminum) and non-ferrous metals (copper and copper alloys).

The milling strategy can be selected individually and the cutting parameters can generally be increased.

Tool life with Swissceramill ceramic end mills

After many series of tests on high performance plastics, light metals and non-ferrous metals, we generally achieve a tool life increase of at least 10 times compared to coated carbide milling tools. This is a huge improvement that we have developed and can now make this technology available to everyone.

Surface finishes with Swissceramill

The surface finishes on the parts by SwissCeraMill ceramic cutters are without vibration marks on the surface and have a very smooth surface finish.

With one milling tool, they can do the roughing process and the finishing process at the same time. Thus, they do not need two tools and save a tool holder space in the machine.

What do we offer?

We specialize in manufacturing individual milling tools from zirconia ceramics from batch size 1 piece, but this has its price.

The idea of the industrial age 4.0 plays a weighty role here. We do not only want to produce in stock, but we want to make the production more flexible and react quickly to the customer's wishes.

We recommend every customer to order a lot size of at least 3 to 5 pieces. This reduces the production costs per SwissCeraMill ceramic milling cutter and increases the economic efficiency.

Lot sizes of 5, 10 and 100 pieces or more can be produced without problems and must be individually adapted to the application.

For batch sizes of 1 piece or more, the customer can help decide on individual adjustments to the cutting length, cutting angle and cutting form.

Dimensions of Swissceramill

We can offer you tools from ø1 mm to ø20 mm with batch sizes from 1 piece and supply more than 100 pieces.

Types of ceramic end mills from Swissceramill

We can produce end mills, torus mills, ball mills and special shape mills in all diameters. This offer is unique in the world and is offered only by BSQ TECH GmbH.

Load on the milling spindle during the milling process

The spindle load with the new technology SwissCeraMill is max. 10 to 20%. The reason for the low spindle load is the cutting edge of all SwissCeraMill milling tools.

The spindle load with conventional carbide tools is at least 40%.

Cutting speeds with SwissCeraMill ceramic end mills

From the many investigations, it has been found that the cutting speed can be selected very differently.

We have discovered that cutting speeds from 200 m/min up to 600 m/min can be worked on the machines. However, the machine must have good dynamics to run the high feed rates.

Therefore, we recommend using cutting speeds generally of 400 m/min on good machines with very good dynamics.

Feed rates and feed per tooth with SwissCeraMill ceramic end mills

The feed per tooth can be selected between 0.05 and 0.1. In general, we recommend selecting a higher feed per tooth at 0.1, as this eliminates vibrations.

SwissCeraMill ceramic end mills full cut milling

Yes, it is even desirable to mill in full cut, because this way the highest removal rates are possible and therefore the highest profit, i.e. time and money, can be achieved.
